Stop War Home | Direct Action Against War

When War Starts

If war is declared protests have been organised in the following places. If your home town isn't listed here and you know of a planned protest please email us at stopwar@schnews.org.uk and we'll add the details.

If in doubt go to your city/town/villiage etc centre at 5 o'clock after the war starts. When war starts, make sure everything else stops!

All Schools
school we are organising a mass walk-out of lessons at 11:30am on the first morning after the war starts.

Berkhamsted

Birmingham
B*U*S*T the War, Birmingham University againST the War are organising a Walkout. The Walkout is planned for the first midday after War is declared. If you oppose the War then WALKOUT and meet outside the
Main Library @ 12pm. Actions, speeches, discussions and vigil are planned. Bring banners, placards, drums, music and friends. Bradford
They will be holding a protest rally in Centenary Square, at 5pm on the day bombing starts. Vast numbers of people make a die-in a very powerful message - please do come.

Brighton

Bristol
Stop the City. On the evening following the outbreak of war meet at the Bristol peace Vigil.

Bournemouth

Cambridge
Meet in the Market Square at 12 noon the day after war breaks out (bring pots and pans or something to make a noise with). At 1pm we will march to the war memorial with a white poppy wreath. Assemble again at 6pm for a protest and vigil outside the Guildhall in the Market Square. Info:

Crewkerne
Demonstrate in front of Victoria Hall in the centre of Crewkerne, between 5 and 6 pm of the evening of that day, or of the following day if war is declared after 4.30 pm. If possible dress up as war victims.

Dewsbury
Meet at 5.30-6.00pm outside Dewsbury Town Hall for a peace vigil & protest

Doncaster
From 5:30pm onwards on the day war is announced or immediately military action takes place - meet outside the Mansion House, Doncaster to protest.

Dundee
City Square 5pm then head to Leauchars airbase

Egham

Farnborough
gather at 6th Form College at 7pm on the night war begins

Glasgow
There will be a massive march, rally and sit-down protest in the streets around George Square at 12 noon on the Saturday following an attack.

Greenwich

Halifax
Assemble 5 - 6pm next to bus station in Halifax for march to the Esso station.

Hebden Bridge

Hereford

A vigil will be held on the day war starts on the Cornhill, Ipswich from 4.30pm onwards to atleast 6.30pm (so bring candles) Everyone, please join in this protest! The following morning there is a call for local groups and friends etc to get together and stop the city stop the

Leicester
Don't Attack Iraq - Stop The City. On the day following a first attack on Iraq why not take the day off/ phone in sick for a protest in Leicester town centre at 8am. There will also be a demonstration at the Clock Tower between 5:30pm and 8pm. Bring placards, banners, anything else you feel should be there. www.leicesterstopthewar.org.uk

In the event of an attack on Iraq, non-violent sit-downs will gather by the statue of Oscar Wilde in Adelaide Street WC2 (at the back of St Martin in the Fields church). St Martin's is the church that abuts onto Trafalgar Square. ** Please note that this supplants earlier plans to gather on the south side of Trafalgar Square.
** 7pm that evening if the attack starts before 4pm
** 7pm the next evening if the attacks start after 4pm

Also, If war is delcared before 1pm on any day then there will be a mass blockade of euston road directly outside euston station beginnning at 1pm, if war if declared after 1pm then people will assemble on gower streeet, wc1 and march down through the
streets to Whitehall. The following day however we will block euston road at 1pm.

Manchester
After the 5 O'clock meeting, we are calling for a blockade at the start of rush hour the following morning of artery roads in local areas, we know of at least 5 blockades already planned, we aim to shut down the whole

Milton Keynes
The day war starts - demonstration called at 6pm that day outside Milton Keynes Central train station, if later demonstration the next day.

Newcastle upon Tyne
Meet 6pm at Grey's Monument (centre of town and well known) for a protest/vigil/demo. (Will be delayed until next day if the news does not come out until mid/late afternoon)

Norwich
Gather on the steps of City Hall, 3pm, 5pm or 7pm(silent vigil), whichever you can make on the day war breaks out.

Nottingham
* If it starts during the evening, get as many people as possible out early the next morning on the main routes into Nottingham, to display placards, drop banners from the bridges and leaflet the traffic. People are encouraged to do what they can during that day, whether at work, college, school, or where they live, then go to the Market Square as soon as you can after work. Assemble from 5:00pm for the rally.

* If it starts late at night, early morning or during the day, go to the Market Square as soon as you can after work, from 5:00pm. The rally will make plans for the following morning

* Visit the website www.nottmagainstwar.org.uk to join the email news list, and/or to join the phone tree for action on the outbreak of war.

Oswestry, Shropshire

Walk out of work 12 noon gather on the Flag Market in front of the Harris Museum the day war begins. Also a demonstration on the Flag Market 6pm that night. Don't go to work next morning!

Scotland
Scottish Coalition for Justice Not War is calling for people to support Tony Benn's call for everyone to
take an hour off work, school or college and to join town and city centre protests from 5pm that evening.

Saffron Walden
Join the protest in Saffron Walden Market Place at 1.00 pm. the day after war is declared.

Sheffield
On the day war is declared gather from 4.30pm gather at the Town Hall steps in Sheffield city centre. And on the first weekday morning after the above early morning demo meeting at 7.30am at Devonshire Green. Bring a bike if you have one but don't worry if you don't. Bring banners, placards, whistles. On the first Saturday after the attack gather at Barkers' Pool at 12 noon for a 'spontaneous' demonstration.

Shepperton
